This study proposes a continuation study of Yu-Ling Chen’s PhD dissertation regarding the discussion about the inappropriateness of the traditional constraint theories in leisurerelated discipline. The major purpose of this study is to examine the role of individuals’ agency in people’s recreation participation, and to investigate how they produce negotiation process which enables individual to overcome the current constraints they encountered in their everyday life. After a thoroughly review of recent literatures about constraints, negotiation, and leisure participation, the author has determined the following five deficiencies: 1.The lack of the discussion about people’s agency/autonomy in constraint theories. 2.The occurrence of constraints cannot explain people’s failure to participate in recreation. 3.The perspective of people’s negotiation strategies is neglected. 4.The recent studies have ignored the overlapping and intertwining relationship between different subjects, such as family members. 5.Few studies concern about the use of qualitative methodology in order to discover the reason and reality that exists behind people’ daily leisure experience, including their participation and rejection to some specific recreation activities. Based on these five deficiencies, the author propose a 3-stage study, and use this study as the initial research to respond those needs.Primarily, the major task of this study is to utilize in-depth interviews and participant observation to investigate 22 families, by focusing on what constraints they had, what strategies they made use of, and what recreation activity they achieved to participate. The result of this study will serve the fundamental basis for composing big-scale questionnaires for Study II (stage II), for the purpose of quantitatively understanding people’s actual negotiation strategies in their recreation participation.
