Abstract
Sleep quality is an important health issue for the elderly. The change of sleep pattern that often accompanies aging may contribute to sleep disturbance among older people and this could affect older people’s mental health and quality of life. Research suggested that a potential for exercise as a good method to improve sleep quality because it is safe, simple, healthy and low cost. Additionally, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome increases with age. Metabolic syndrome is associated with incidence of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality. Research has found a significant association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome. After controlling variables of obesity and diabetes (two main factors of the metabolic syndrome), exercise still showed significant improvement in sleep quality. However, the results are limited to cross-sectional research. Understanding the associations among exercise, sleep disturbance and metabolic syndrome will help to provide information for dealing with public health issues, such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes, et al. this study will explore the relationship between exercise and sleep quality in older adults with metabolic syndrome controlling demographic variables, psychological factors and health related behaviors with 3-year follow up.
