Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences of biomechanical parameters in obstacle crossing and the parameters in physical fitness tests before and after a 3-month elderly functional fitness exercise intervention. Methods: Eleven and 27 subjects participated in obstacle crossing and functional fitness tests, respectively. VICON motion analysis system with eight cameras was used to record kinematic data during negotiating obstacles in three different heights. The functional fitness test was also performed. Two-way ANOVA with repeated measure was used to evaluate the effects of obstacle height and exercise intervention. Paired-t test was used to compare the fitness change following exercise intervention. Results: The leading foot toe clearance significantly increased and the minimum velocity of the pelvis center significantly decreased following exercise intervention. All fitness tests showed significant improvement compared to pre-intervention. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggested that the older people had substantial improvement in physical fitness following a 3-month elderly functional fitness exercise program and the strategy of obstacle crossing has been modified. The functional fitness exercise is beneficial for the prevention of the fall in the elderly.
