Abstract
Comparing to other recreational activities, golf has been perceived as a costly sport. The fees for attending a golf club can be more than a million dollars. Without a specific recreational purpose, why a golf player is willing to pay such a high price? Thus, this study aimed to understand the socioeconomic status of golf players and the relevant factors that affect their motivation to play golf. The four main purposes of this study are: (1) to understand the motivation of golf players for playing golf; (2) to examine the differences between the socioeconomic status of players and their motivation for playing golf; (3) to provide suggestions for the management of golf courses. Questionnaires were delivered to the golf players at the Typhone Golf Course of Ping-Tung City. Totally 139 questionnaires were collected.
The questionnaire contained two major sections, the background information and player's motivation. To understand the motivation of golf players, Factor Analysis (Principle Component Analysis) was conducted. Five factors were identified, including (1) health status and fitness, (2) pursuit for knowledge, (3) pursuit for self-achievement, (4) pursuit for social relationship and (5) need for self-fulfillment. In addition, the statistical analysis of One-way ANOVA (Scheffe) was conducted to examine the differences between the players' socioeconomic status and their motivation. The results indicated that there is no significant difference between the educational backgrounds of players and their motivation. Also, factory workers, soldiers, police officers, service workers and housekeepers demonstrated greater motivation for self-fulfillment than the self-employed people. Finally, the results indicated no significant difference between the average income of golf players and their motivation for playing golf.
