Abstract
This study analyses the goals scored at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa by examining the following data: time of shooting, shooting surface, playing position of shooter, shooting area, and number of touches taken to control before shooting. The subjects of study were the 32 teams participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.The main sources of data were the 2010 FIFA World Cup Technical Report and Goals DVD provided by the Chinese Taipei Football Association.Data on the goals scored was collected using slow-motion analysis of the FIFA Goals DVD.The statistical significance of the data obtained was tested using descriptive statistics and χ 2 (chi-square) test. The results obtained are as follows:
1. Statistical significance (*p < .05) was observed in each of the following areas: time of shooting, shooting surface, playing position of shooter, shooting area, and number of touches taken to control before shooting.
2. Time of shooting: The largest number of goals was scored during the 76-90 minute period in the 2nd half. The next highest was during the 61-75 minute period of the 2nd half. In each of the above 2 periods a statistical significance was observed (χ 2 = 13.193).
3. Shooting Area: The largest number of goals, 59 (40.7% of total goals), was scored from area A; next was area B (47 goals, 32.4%). The data showed that scoring success was mostly achieved in these two areas. A statistical significance of χ 2 = 34.062 was obtained.
4. Shooting surface: The largest number of goals was scored with the right foot (81 goals, 55.9%). The data showed that most goals were scored with the players’ strongest foot, obtaining a statistical significance of χ 2 = 91.110.
5. Playing position: 79 goals (54.5%) were scored by forwards, with a statistical significance of χ 2 = 96.186, proving that the forwards still play the main role in goalscoring.
6. Number of touches taken to control before shooting: 74 goals (51%) were scored after using just 1 touch to control the ball, making a statistical significance of χ 2 = 94.414.
