dc.description.abstract It is a priority for injured athletes to pay efforts during recovery period in order to return to competition. They have to endure the physical pain as well as the negative emotions. Thus, how social support and sports injury related to each other; and how it affects the return to competition of an athlete? The present of the study was to understand the psychological distress and emotional reactions of the injured athletes in returning to competition, the social support they received during recovery period and further to explore how social support influences the return of injured athletes. The study used qualitative research method. According to the triangulation method as the research reliability, the study analyzed the data collected from eighteen semi-structured interviews with subjects and using inductive content analysis with two other peers. The results indicated that the psychological distress and emotional reactions of injured athletes derived from negation, break down and frustration itself and coaches’ sarcasm or push out by teammates. During the recovery period, they worried the recovery take too long result in regress in technique and tactics and losing their spot in the team. As time gone by, they still chose to accept the facts and look forward to the opportunities in the future. The injured athletes will receive emotional consolation, self-esteem encourage, rehabilitation information and tangible support from their surrounding during the recovery period. On the contrary, they also experience too much, not enough or inadequate social support and cause some negative effects. Finally, whether the injured athletes can back the competition in time and successfully or not, depends on negative behavioral responses and the negative effects of social support from coaches and teammates around them.
