Abstract
Despite some researches that focus on the females’ unequal participation and unfair treatment they experienced in the context of sport, in Taiwan, there are few studies that recognize the sport field as a special place that is capable of producing gender inequity and contradictory identity. Especially when the definition of success is seriously contradicted to the gender image that accepted by society, how female athletes negotiate their performance and take care of their gender identity becomes a sociologic problem. On the basis of this omission, this study attempts to take feminist standpoint and adopt qualitative research in order to expose and criticize the conflict process within the idea of gender that possibly results the unfairness and injustice in sport field. More specifically, this study intends to examine what conflict is produced through athletes’ training process, why the body image of female athletes becomes an object to be blamed, and how their gender identify evolves when they encounter the confusion between social expectation and their professional training. Totally 45 professional female athletes from different varsitie—30 regular, and 15 lesbians— will be recruited for data collection purpose, and the focused group and the in-depth interviews , plus the content analysis of the published figure of female athletes on commercial magazines will be the most fundamental method for collecting data in order to expose female athletes’ voice and situation.
