Cycling tour has been a very popular outdoor activity in Taiwan today. The ultimate way for a cycling tour in Taiwan is always the island-cycling tour or the high-difficulty mountain-climbing tour with somewhat feelings of challenge. In spite of the enjoyment of pedaling and touring around, how much can one realize the impact to our body, not only the physical aspects, but also the physiological aspects, especially the circulation system. In this place, some hematological markers, for example, cardiac troponin T (cTnT), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and its precursor protein N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) will be analyzed for heart stress. That is the purpose of this study trying to elucidate whether long-term cycling tour is positively healthy to our body, or will become negatively chronic injuries to our heart or circulation system during this high intensity, high duration activity. This research will set target on the members of one Taiwan island-cycling tour team, “Iron Camel cycling tour of Taiwan”, which was held since 1986 and is now held by National Taiwan College of Physical Education (NTCPE) on July every year. Members, no matter sedentary or trained subjects, during this event should have the ability to ride on an daily average riding distance of over 70 ~ 80 kilometers, and the time for pedaling on the saddle would be about 5 ~ 6 hours each day, sometimes they should even climb the mountain for an altitude change about 1,000 m at one day. Volunteers for this research will be recruited by directly asking the members when they sign for the rules of joining this event, also will the purpose and content of this research be told for these participants. Before departure, individual physical parameters, fitness items will be measured before and after the event. During the event, intravenous acupuncture will be done for gathering blood sample. Items measured for biochemical parameters will be repeated every three days, and also as on the later days after finishing the 15-day-long Taiwan-cycling tour, one week, two weeks and one month after the event. Research assistants or students belonged to NTCPE will be recruited for the data gathering and sample transporting during the cycling tour and data analysis after the event. Fitness parameters, such as data of strength, flexibility, endurance ability and V& O 2 max measured during these weeks will later be input into computers for further statistical analysis. Blood and urine samples will be analyzed for tracing the adaptations of our body. Finally, heart overload index and chronic injuries will be measured by the blood level of the cTnT, BNP and NT-pro-BNP. We sincerely hope to give some useful advices to those who take cycling as their leisure sport – no matter at very long journey which costs days or months, or to those who enjoy ultimate sports, such as triathlon and ultramarathon cycling, which take much more endurance, strength, and time. Finally, evaluation on heart overload and advices on sports prescription will be suggested by focusing on the way of cycling.
