This project focuses on the life narratives and cultural memories of the participants in the Chinese Min-Zu Dance Competition during 1954-1970 in Taiwan. Besides widely collecting historical materials and texts, I use interviews as my major research approach to provide the micro-perspective, such as individual interpretations and their bodily experiences, in order to avoid simply hiring macro-narratives, such as Nationalism, to analyze this event. I also employ the theoretical arguments from cultural memories and dance studies to posit an inquiry on the Dancing Body, instead of overemphasizing the importance of visual symbols in the past researches. In order to keep its focus on the Chinese Min-Zu Dance Competition and the dance community on that period, this project was designed as a two-year plan. In the first year, I will focus on the participants who won the best national awards in the individual performance. In the second year, I will track and try to contact the participants who joined the school group performance and won the national awards. I argue that, if we inspect this event from the perspectives of bodily experience of women and collective cultural practices, the Min-Zu Dancing body is the space where the different discourses interacted and where the agency generated at that time. I also argue that this event is an important cultural memory of dance community and of general public in the 1950s and 1960s Taiwan, which should be seriously reconsidered in academia.
