Abstract
Healthy sleep is necessary to people’s health and well-being. Poor sleep quality has been found to be associated with several illness, such as depression, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and overall mortality. The change of sleep pattern among older adults may contribute to sleep disturbance and this could affect their physical and mental health. Exercise has been suggested to be one of the means to improve sleep quality since it is relatively safe, is low cost, has infrequent side effects, and has several other health benefits. However, previous research has mainly focused on the effects/associations between moderate-vigorous exercise/physical activity and sleep quality. Studies examining the effects of light physical activity on sleep quality is limited, whereas light physical activity is the main activity of daily life among older adults. Exploring the effects of light physical activity on sleep quality in older adults will help to provide information for promotion physical active and healthy aging among this group. In older to gain insights into these issues, the current study will adopt questionnaire survey and experimental design into three phase within three years. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey will be conducted to understand the associations between different intensities of physical activity and sleep quality at the first phase. In the second year, an intervention study will be carried out to further explore the effects of walking on sleep quality. Finally, a follow-up questionnaire survey will be conducted in the third year. Then, another intervention study of Taiko drumming will be carried out among sedentary older adults.
