Abstract

The major purpose of this research was to explore the participation motives, experience, and transformation of identity through the process of being volunteers. In addition, this study also attempted to enrich more modern explanation to the concept of serious leisure and traditional theory of social identity. Primarily, in-depth interviews and participant observation has been utilized for data collection purpose in this study, and 10 volunteers from Baguashan Tourist Center have been selected for providing their insights and thick description regarding their working/leisure experience acquired from volunteer setting. Through the operation of the grounded theory for data analysis purpose, three core theories (including social exchange, role expectation, serious leisure),and one final conclusion (social identity) that directs volunteers’ behavior and experience were emerged .The “identity” presented in this research indicates that those volunteers, through interaction between society and their own leisure experience, will continuously adjust themselves to fulfill the ideal role assigned by this social process, and further obtain the opportunity to re-affirmed the value of themselves, then identify themselves.
