Abstract
The purpose of this study is to understand cross-cultural adaptation and leisure participation of Malaysian Overseas Chinese Students (MOCS) who study in Taiwan. This study used qualitative research as research methods, seventeen MOCS who study at National Chung Hsing University were selected through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews and focus group interview were conducted to collect data. The result showed that when MOCS first came to Taiwan, they will encounter food, transportation, climate, language, academic and other aspects of impact, but through changes in mentality and social support, not only do they gradually adapt to life in Taiwan, but they will also further identify with this land. Therefore, this study divided MOCS cross-cultural adaptation process into three phases, culture shock and disputes phase, cultural adjustment and adaptation phase and culture comfort and identity phase. MOCS leisure participation in Taiwan mainly continued their native country way. Types of participation are static leisure and Dynamic leisure. Static Leisure includes mass culture category and online games category, whereas dynamic leisure includes recreational sports category, social entertainment category, students' organization category and sightseeing category. However, due to cultural differences, environmental and money and other factors, they forced to transform, reduce or even stop their participation on certain leisure activities. Most MOCS will explore at least one new leisure activity when they study in Taiwan. Leisure participation impact on MOCS cross-cultural adaptation includes relieving stress and adjusting mood, developing relationships, maintaining health and enhancing self-confidence, as well as local exploration and recognition. For MOCS, leisure participation is part of their cross-cultural adaptation process. Leisure participation and cross-cultural adaptation is showing an inseparable two-way relationship which has a mutual influence between each other, and influence MOCS cross-cultural adaptation process.
