Abstract

This research aims at discussing the recognition and attitude of residents in Sun Moon Lake towards how the activity of swimming across Sun Moon Lake affects local tourism development. It also analyzes how residents’ support changes as some conditions change. Taking people over 20 dwelling in five districts of Yuchi Township as subjects, the questionnaire includes 23 questions for impact factors and 2 questions for the scale of residents’ attitude. There are 500 questionnaires by convenient sampling, 466 effective, yielding a response rate of 93.2%. As for the first part, positive and negative impact factors are extracted for the use of factor analysis. Four positive impact factors include economics impact, local culture, international image, public infrastructure, and community consciousness and living quality; two negative impact factors include environmental damage and crowded level. Then, by cluster analysis, interviewers are classified into three groups: supporter, neutralist and opposers. The majority of responders consider the influence resulted from the activity of swimming across Sun Moon Lake positive. When conditions, such as the economic development, crowdedness and environmental pollution, change, all of the six impact factors are influenced in a positive way. The residents enhance their support as well.
